In honor of the 2,753 individuals who died in the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001 three Coal City School High School students paid tribute to the men and women who perished in the World Trade Center by recreating the 110 story climb up the towers New York City’s first responders took that day.
Gavin Zeich, and Zander and Gavin Nicola—local fire department cadets put on their fire gear and climbed up and down stairs at the Coal City High School Stadium on Sunday evening, Sept. 7. The teens replicated the 2,071 step climb members of the FDNY took that September morning in their efforts to clear the World Trade Center Towers.
Family and friends were at the stadium in support of their effort to remember those who died in the attacks—343 of them firefighters. Each of the cadets honored a fallen firefighter by posting their name and photo on their air packs during the stair climb.
All three are cadets with the Braceville Fire Protection District and Zander also recently signed on with the Mazon Fire Protection District. As cadets they dedicate several hours each week training with their departments to learn life saving techniques in order to serve the local community.
