Getting to know the LRC

This week, all of Mrs. Hayse’s freshman English students visited the Learning Resource Center to discover the research tools and reading resources available to support their high school success. During orientation, students learned how to access research databases, find books using the digital card catalogue, and navigate the LRC website. High school librarian Allison Peterson presented various features that the library offers students, took them on a tour of the LRC, and ran a scavenger hunt for students to test their knowledge of the library's resources.

At the end of the class period, students selected their independent reading novels to help them with their Page-Turner Protocol:  a reading initiative created to help them increase their reading stamina and to reignite their passion for reading. For the first seven weeks of school, students will be challenged to read for pleasure—helping students re-establish their habit of reading. Much like preparing for a race, students will be reading each day, starting small while gradually increasing how long they’re reading each week. Students will start at 10 minutes and end at 30 minutes.

In class, students will track their daily reading in a log, journal about their reading and discuss the books with peers, and meet with Mrs. Hayse to discuss their progress and book selections. The goal is to make sure that everyone finds a book that’s right for them.

“To support your students at home, ask them about what they’re reading and whether or not their book is a perfect fit,” Mrs. Hayse said.
