Track & Field honors its seniors

Senior members of the Coalers Track and Field Teams  were recognized during Senior Night activities on May 5. Honored for their commitment and contributions to the program were—Jerry Carlson, Owen Kent, Deborah Lynch, Avery McConnell, Mason Natyshok and Jackson Wharrie.

Jerry Carlson is the speedster of the team and over the years he has matured into an exceptional leader and teammate, lifting the spirits of those around him. He competes in the 100m, 200m, 4x1 and 4x2 relays for the Coalers. Over his four years in the program he has racked up over 100 points and 30 career personal records. Jerry will be attending Illinois State University, his major remains undecided. He was escorted on Senior Night by Bonnie Carlson.

Owen Kent got started in the track program as a sophomore at Coal City High School and quickly found a home in the sand pits. This season he has been competing in long jump and triple jump. Owen’s plans for the future find him heading to the University of Alabama Birmingham to study biochemistry. As he moves on, Owen’s leadership and positivity will be missed by his coaches and teammates. On Senior Night, Owen was accompanied by his parents, John and Rebecca Kent.

Looking to make the most of her senior year, Deborah Lynch joined the track team this season and has been competing  in the 4x800, 800, 1600 and 3200 events. Known for her kindness and upbeat personality, she will be missed next season. Deborah will be continuing her education at the University of Illinois pursuing a degree in biology on a pre-med track. Escorting Deborah on Senior Night was Luda Lynch.

Avery McConnell is a two year member of the track team competing in the pole vault, 1600 and 4x800 m events. Her coaches say Avery's drive for improvement and eagerness to help her fellow teammates will be missed when she graduates. Along with track, Avery is a member and captain of the trapshooting team. She will be attending Florida Atlantic University majoring in criminal justice. Escorting her on Senior Night were her parents Pete and Kelly McConnell.

Mason Natyshok, some say, was pressured into joining the team by his friend, Evelyn. He is a utility runner for the team competing in just about every sprints race over his two years on the team. Mason, his coaches say, is a talented individual both on and off the track and they will miss his cheerful demeanor and friendly nature. Mason will attend Illinois State University to double major in theatre and dance. On Senior Night he was escorted by his parents Nick and Andrea Natyshok.

Jackson Wharrie is a four year member of the Coalers Track & Field Team participating in the long and triple jump events. “While his road has been tougher than most, he can be depended on for his wit and work ethic while on the field,” said coach Kepner, who adds, “Jackson has always come to the track ready to work and have fun. His big personality and piercing wit will be missed.” Jackson is currently undecided on his plans after high school. On Senior Night he was accompanied by his parents, Kevin and Valarie Wharrie.
