Celebrating the season with hope and light

 

The annual winter concert featuring the Coal City High School Choirs was held Tuesday, Dec. 10 in the Coal City Performing Arts Center. The theme of the evening was one of hope and light. 

 

The Coaler Choir began with a piece arranged by Jim Papoulis titled “Give Us Hope” The group also presented “Shine Like Stars” and “It’s All Right” from the Disney movie “Soul.”

 

Coal City’s Footnotes show choir took the stage to present “Where Are You Christmas?”The performance featured solos by Cora Armstrong, Caroline Childers, Mason Natyshok and Madison Wilson.

 

Three numbers were presented by the Concert Singers. The performance began with “Lux Arumque,” followed by “Can We Sing the Darkness to Light?” The final song of the evening was “Be the LIght,” and was accompanied by high school instrumental musicians Shaun Polarek and Liam Seeley.

 

Coal City Choirs are directed by Michael Kren and the groups were accompanied on the piano by Erik Olson. 

 

The choir also invited the Coal City High School Madrigals to participate in the concert. The 20-member group presented three of the songs that will be performed during the annual Madrigal concert and play that will take place this weekend—Dec. 13-15—in the Performing Arts Center. Following the Madrigal performances, the next Coal City Music Department concert will be on Tuesday, Dec. 17 featuring the middle school band under the direction of Andrew Brimm and the final concert of the season will feature the middle school choirs on Thursday, Dec. 29. Both middle school concerts will begin at 7 p.m. in the Coal City Performing Arts Center.
