One for the history books

The Lady Coaler Golf Team finished in first place at the Illinois High School Association’s Regional Tournament at Dwight Country Club on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The victory makes school history as they are the first girls golf team to earn a Regional Championship.

Coal City had two medalists with Dakota Clubb coming in third and Kylee Kennell was fourth out of 75 golfers.  Overall, the team had four of the top eight golfers in the tournament with Madi Peterson finishing seventh and D'Arcy Ness coming in at eighth.

“I am extremely proud of how these girls have started playing together as a team to accomplish goals that they set at the end of last season.  We struggled on the front 9 today, but they stayed positive and put together a great back 9. They are the first to pave the way for future girls golfers at Coal City High School, and that is very special,” said Coach Harlan Kennell, who is assisted by Tim Gabehart.

Individual scores for the Lady Coalers were Dakota Clubb, 94; Kylee Kennell, 97; Madi Peterson, 101; D’Arcy Ness, 102; Peyton Gibson, 113, and Livia Sulzberger, 124.

Finishing behind Coal City were Hoopeston, Watseka, Grant Park, Dwight, McNamara, Reed-Custer and Manteno.

The Lady Coalers advance to the IHSA Sectional at El Paso Golf Club on Monday, Oct. 7.
