Science of the Modern World - Spring 2020-3B Assignments

Choose one of the topics attached to this assignment to do background research and perform an at home experiment. For this week, you only need to choose your topic and fill out the worksheet through the procedures. You need to have your procedures approved BEFORE doing your experiment next week.

Do NOT go out and buy a bunch of materials for this assignment. You should choose a topic that you have materials at home to study. If you need help, let us know.

Make a copy of whichever you choose to do and attach it by the beginning of next week.

This week we will be creating a video news report OR writing a newspaper article about a natural disaster event. You can report on a real disaster or create your own based on things that could happen. Use this worksheet to plan out your report/article. I recommend you choose one of the same types of Natural Disasters that you researched this past week. You will be able to reuse some of the information.


To turn in this assignment, attach it to the Google Classroom assignment or email your video/article to myself or Mrs. T.

This assignment is worth up to 30 points. Select from the on this sheet to earn the grade you desire. The minimum amount of points for this to be considered “complete” is 21 out of 30. Each task is worth a different number of points. The easier a task is, the less points it's worth. Each task has a Google Form to fill out. The forms are what we will be looking at and grading. Complete the attached form as you complete a scavenger hunt throughout your home and neighborhood. Make sure to follow all social distancing guidelines.

You might need to look up the definition of some of the words on the scavenger hunt.

Students will choose from one of the following alternative energy sources or greener energy usages and write a persuasive letter to either Dr. Bugg (Superintendent of Coal City Schools) to encourage him to implement your suggested changes.

Some students already did this before Spring Break when work was "optional". If you already did this, just refresh your memory for next week. If you didn't complete this and turn it in, follow the instructions on the attached document to learn about a variety of alternative energy sources. Fill out the worksheet and click turn in when done.

Attached you will find 5 documents.
1 - Argumentative Essay Due Dates and Graphic Organizer. Use this to outline your essay. You should be as detailed as you can here to make writing your essay easier. Don't use short hand. Make sure you use quotes from your various articles.
2 - APA Template - When we go to type our essays, this will help you with your formatting. DO NOT create your own document.
3 - STEP 1A - You'll get a paper copy of this in class, but this will help give you a rough outline of your topics. This is the first step in your outlining process.
4 - APA Citations - How to guide to citing. The easiest thing to do would be to use the citation generator built in the research databases.
