Coal City High School has a proud tradition of athletic success. The school has earned four IHSA state championship trophies, including football [1993, Class 2A], softball [2010, Class 2A], and wrestling [2023 and 2025, Class 1A]. Coal City High School is a member of the Illinois Central Eight Conference [ICE].

The Coal City Theatre Department produces four main stage shows each academic year—Coal City High School Fall Play, Coal City Middle School Musical, Coal City High School Spring Musical and Intermediate School Musical.
