As Abby Stiles collects her diploma on Sunday, she leaves high school with the tools to be successful in the next stages of her education and in life.

“Coal City High School has prepared me for my future by helping me learn the valuable asset of time management and responsibility through being held accountable—balancing work, sports, clubs and school,” said Stiles, who graduates as salutatorian.

Stiles joins Dominic Cimino at the top of the class of 2024.

Cimino closes out his high school journey as valedictorian of the 110th graduating class of Coal City High School, an honor that he said means all of his diligence the past four years has paid off. “Working hard and persevering through the harder classes was worth the effort.”

Cimino, the son of Racheal and Daniel Cimino, set lofty academic goals from classroom grades to AP exams and the SAT. His success has been spurred by his brother, Jacob.  “He has been a motivating factor to push me and set the bar high enough that it is a challenge to reach, and he has made sure that I never truly slacked off in my academics,” Cimino said.

The valedictorian posted a 4.652 grade point average [gpa]  and earned recognition as an Illinois State Scholar by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, is a AP Scholar with Distinction and a recipient of the National Rural and Small Town Award given by the College Board.

Stiles, Ciminio and the class of 2024 will gather in the school’s competition gym at 2 p.m. on Sunday for commencement, it will be the final time the group will be together in the space.

As the hours of being a high school student tick away, Cimino looked back to his first day of high school and noted how his view of the world has significantly expanded. “As people learn more, they realize just how complex everything is, and in the many classes I have taken throughout my high school years, it was amazing to finally realize how wide the world is. This is a depth I was lacking during my freshman year.”

On the knowledge gained, the valedictorian’s advice to the class of 2025 is, “challenge yourself. I know it is difficult to put in the effort, but it pays off. Don’t slack off just because you are almost done. Sprint through the finish line, don’t slow down to leisurely walk over it.”
