Local scholarships support graduating seniors

As we continue to highlight the various scholarships available to graduating seniors today we  feature Bob’s Advanced Auto and Tire, Aimee Gerhardt Outstanding Human, Kim Ferrari Memorial, Coal City Student Council, CCCUEA Teacher, Dennis M. Neary and Grundy County Law Enforcement Managers Association scholarships.


Bob and Debbie Davis support the community in many ways and one of those is with the Bob’s Advanced Auto & Tire Scholarship. The $1,000 award is presented in the spring to  assist a Coal City High School graduate with the cost of earning a college degree at an approved/accredited college or university.  Applications are due April 14. 


The Aimee Gerhardt Memorial Scholarship was established by her aunt and uncle, Debbie and Bob Davis, to honor the memory of a young woman who lived life as if everyday was her last. Aimee passed away in 2018 after a short battle with rhabdomyosarcoma.  The $1,000 scholarship in her name will be presented to up to two Coal City High School seniors on the basis of being a well rounded student who demonstrates leadership, work ethic, integrity, perseverance, passion for others, commitment with a purpose and a significant commitment of volunteer service to the community. An essay on the topic of “What you can do to make a difference in today’s world,” and two letters of recommendation are required along with a completed application. Applications are due April 30.


The Kim Ferrari Memorial Scholarship was established by Kim’s family and friends in recognition of her entrepreneurial spirit. The $500 scholarship seeks to assist Coal City High School graduates interested in pursuing a degree in business. Applicants must be accepted to an approved/accredited college or university and be a full-time student. In order to be considered for the financial award a student must submit a completed application, by April 12, including a letter of recommendation and essay.


Each year the Coal City High School Student Council presents two scholarships to graduating seniors who have demonstrated leadership, scholastic ability, are of good character and who have been involved in school and community activities. Applications are due April 19.


To promote education and training in the field of elementary, middle and secondary education, the Coal City Community Unit Education Association [CCUEA] established a scholarship to assist future educators with the cost of obtaining a degree. CCUEA, the union that represents the school district’s certified staff, provides up to $500 annually to graduating seniors and/or alumni enrolled in a program of study that will result in a teaching certificate. Complete application forms are due April 19. 


Named in honor of its late police chief, the Coal City Police Department presents the Dennis M. Neary Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior enrolling as a full-time student in an institute of higher learning. Applicants must complete the application form, submit an essay and provide three references. Applications are due April 19. 


The Grundy County Law Enforcement Managers Association will present four $500 scholarships to 2024 graduates. Those selected for the financial awards will be students attending a college or university as a full time student in a degree bound program preferably related to criminal justice or law enforcement.  The ideal applicant is one that has a proven record of work ethic, interest in their community and public service. Completed applications are due by April 19.
