Description - The After School Assistance Program occurs in the library after school until 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Bass Fishing
Coalers with Character
- Sponsor - Brad Boresi
- Requirements - Students must participate in one sport throughout the year in order to be a member.
- Description - Coalers with Character is an athletic leadership group at Coal City High School that focuses on providing the students with lessons on leadership, service, and character. The group meets once a month, and they are very active in the school and community with different service projects.
- How to Join - Students interested in joining must attend a meeting at the beginning of the school year.
Color Guard

Drama Club
- Sponsor - Jack Micetich
- Requirements - Attend monthly meetings
- Description - Drama Club is a place for students to create, perform and have fun while putting on plays, musicals and events. It's open to everyone and a great way to build community and be part of something special. You do not have to be in shows to be a member of Drama Club. This group is open to any students interested in the performing arts.

Fall Play

- Description -Coal City Theatre Department's fall play kicks off the year with an exciting mix of storytelling, character development, and stagecraft. Students work together to bring each production to life, building skills both on stage and behind the scenes.

Footnotes
- Sponsor - Matthew Felbien
- Requirements - Anyone is invited to audition at the beginning of each school year.
- Description - Footnotes is the extracurricular vocal group at Coal City High School. They sing different music throughout the year in preparation for the two concerts that curricular groups sing in. This group will also perform in a variety of venues throughout the community. The music that will be performed by this group ranges in style, including a cappella, prop, musical theatre and more.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

- Requirements - Any student is welcome to join before November of the current school year. Students must be taking a business course and have taken one semester of a business course.
- Description - Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world. A quarter of a million high school and middle school students, college, and university students, faculty, educators, administrators, and business professionals have chosen to be members of the premiere business education association preparing students for careers in business. Why is FBLA so popular? It's simple! We have developed a unique value program that excites students, faculty, and administrators, and business professionals to join our organization. If you are interested in developing leadership, communication, and team skills, or simply looking for an organization to meet and network with others at the local, state, and national levels, then FBLA is the organization for you.
Gamers Guild

- Description - Gamers Guild is an all-inclusive group of students who enjoy tabletop gaming, RPG, and other board games. We meet twice a month after school to play. Students can attend as often or as little as they like.

Genders & Sexualities Alliances (GSA)

- Requirements - None
- Description - GSA is a student organization that unites LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Meetings happen during CCT and after school, and there are several opportunities for after school social events. Our major goals are to support, educate, inform, and provide opportunities to socialize. We strive to create safe spaces for students and raise awareness of the issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community. The CCHS GSA is registered as part of the national organization.

Hidden Gems Book Club

- Description -Hidden Gems Book Club welcomes all Coal City students on their reading journey, regardless of experience or confidence level. We create an inclusive environment where students discover amazing books, engage in meaningful discussions, and support each other's growth as readers and critical thinkers. Every voice matters. Every perspective matters. Every reader matters.
Jazz Band

Link Leaders
- Sponsors - Katie Thetard and Stephanie Vucsko
- Requirements - Any sophomore, junior, or senior is welcome to apply and interview.
- Description - The purpose of having the Link Leader program is to assist freshmen (and others) in adjusting to the high school atmosphere and responsibilities, along with creating and encouraging a positive community. Link Leaders are available to make sure that every freshman feels welcomed and has a great high school experience. Link Leaders will be placed in each CCT to help students be successful.
Madrigals
- Sponsors - Shanan D'Agostino and Ann Gill
- Requirements - Open to any high school student who enjoys vocal performance.
- Description - Madrigals is a unique program within the school's music department and consists of a select group of student vocalists who mainly perform 15th and 16th century a cappella music during the holiday season. Madrigals meet weekly from September through the annual Madrigal performances held the second weekend in December. The Madrigal performances consist of a concert and play. The group also participates in various holiday events in the months of November and December and performs in the high school’s choral concert.

Math Team

- Requirements - Freshmen enrolled in Advanced Algebra 1 or 2, sophomores enrolled in Advanced Geometry, and juniors and seniors enrolled in Advanced or AP Courses.
- Description - Math team is a group for competitive students looking to do (a little) extra math. The math team competes in two different competitions—the Illinois Central Eight [ICE] Conference competition as well as the Joliet Junior College Competition. The team hosts optional practices leading up to the competitions, which will occasionally include food and snacks. If you like math and have a competitive spirit, this is the club for you!
- How to Join - Flyers will be posted around the school with QR codes to the Google Form for sign up. Practices begin in December/January, and the Google Classroom with all pertinent information is open around October/November.
Music Honors Society

National Honor Society [NHS]
- Sponsor - Brad Schmitt
- Requirements - Open to students with a 3.75 or higher grade point average [GPA]
- Description - Students who are sophomores through seniors and have a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA will be eligible to be a candidate for the National Honor Society. Lists of those students who are eligible will be posted throughout the building in September of each school year and those students will be asked to attend ALL meetings and meet the necessary requirements of The Pete DiPaolo Chapter of the NHS. All students will be rated on service, character, and leadership by our Staff and Faculty Council.
- How to Join - Current juniors and seniors can attend the first meeting in September. Eligible sophomores to seniors will be informed via email of all the qualifications that need to be met if they decide to be a part of NHS.
Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS)
- Sponsor - Justin Kinder
- Requirements - Attend an informational meeting at the beginning of the school year; Complete student application, attend weekly meetings, participate in extracurricular activities with PATH students, and most importantly, have fun.
- Description - PALS is composed of a group of students who are great role models and positive student leaders. A member of PALS should be enthusiastic and school spirited, but also genuinely concerned for others around them in school and in the community. Members of PALS engage with students from the PATH program while enjoying fun activities that help build social and learning skills. Each member should truly want to be involved with promoting a positive school atmosphere and with helping others while including their special education peers.

Pep Band

Ping Pong Club
- Sponsor - Jeremy Unger
- Requirements - No requirements are necessary. We meet every Wednesday after school in the events entry hallway from September to February.
- Description - This club is open to anyone who wants to play ping pong. It is a relaxing stress-free club to have fun and improve your table tennis skills.
Racket Club
- Sponsors - Matt Leman and Jeremy Unger
- Requirements - Meet every morning at 7 a.m. in the Aux Gym starting in November.
- Description - This club is open to all who enjoy racket sports. Included in this are pickleball, badminton, and ping pong.
Scholastic Bowl
- Sponsors - Mark Fiske and Tyler Castle
- Requirements - Open to all students interested in joining the team. Scholastic Bowl has both a JV and Varsity team. JV is made up of freshmen to sophomores and Varsity is made up of juniors and seniors, however, skilled players on the JV team can be moved up to Varsity before the regular season begins.
- Description - Scholastic Bowl is a competitive, IHSA sanctioned academic quiz game where teams of students answer questions on diverse subjects using a buzzer system to earn points. Similar to quiz bowl or Jeopardy!, teams compete in rounds of "toss up" questions, where a correct answer awards points and the chance to answer bonus questions for more points. The season typically runs from October through March, with the state tournament held in mid-March
- How to Join - The Scholastic Bowl Team holds an interest meeting with information about the season and expectations for the team members. If interested please contact Mr. Fiske or Mr. Castle.
Science Club
- Sponsor - Richard Taylor
- Requirements - Any student is welcome to join at any time. Participation hours of service are kept for each member. Eligibility for officer positions and the two field trips is based on hours.
- Description - This is a club of high school students who enjoy science and nature, and aspire to learn more through a variety of fun activities. Our two pillars are service and education.
- How to Join - Find the Google Classroom code posted on posters around the school. Find and event you have time for and show up.
Spanish Honor Society
- Sponsor - Kim Sondegroth
- Requirements - Students must have completed Spanish 2 to become eligible. They must have a GPA in Spanish of 3.5 or higher and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students must have no serious disciplinary records.
- Description - The mission of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is to recognize high school achievement in Spanish and to promote interest in Hispanic studies.
- How to Join - Students will be invited at the beginning of Spanish 3 if they are eligible and then fill out an application form.
Speech
- Sponsors - Dave Sinkular, Ben Baer and Colin Keppner
- Requirements - Any student is welcome to join, no prior experience required. There are competitions designed for novice through veteran levels.
- Description -The speech team is a competitive program that teaches students how to perform and present in front of an audience. The team has 14 categories ranging from straight public speaking through solo and duet acting. Our number one goal is to improve each student's ability to present in front of a audience. There is a state series that allows our students to compete from regionals through the state competition. Students will also interact with competitors from around the state, travel to other schools, and take part in one of the most facinating competitions around. The skills learned here will be some of the most useful skills a person can learn and will be used throughout their lifetime, regardless of their chosen profession.
- How to Join - The speech team begins its auditions (there are no cuts) in October of the school year. Prospective members will need to see Mr. Sinkular or Mr. Baer in order to be placed on the team and to sign up for practices. If anyone has questions, they can see us before that time as well.
Spring Musical
- Sponsor - Jack Micetich
- Requirements - Audition and be cast
- Description - Coal City Theatre Department's spring musical brings together talented student to showcase their skills in acting, staging, dancing, and technical theatre. This production is typical adjudicated for the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards.
- How to Join - Auditions typically take place in November.
Student Ambassadors
- Sponsor - Art Stafford
- Requirements - No disciplinary referrals, C average or higher, participate in at least one Ambassador activity per semester
- Description - Ambassadors complete the Philanthropy project, assist with school spirit and staff interviews, lead new staff and students, give tours to incoming freshmen, support the Principal with programs, and create programs to boost school spirit and student involvement.

Student Council
- Sponsors - Allison Peterson and Stephanie Vucsko
- Requirements - All members are elected —sophomores, juniors, seniors in the spring of previous school year and freshmen in the fall of current school year. All members must be in exemplary academic standing and have no disciplinary incidents on their record.
- Description - Student Council plans Homecoming each year in the fall, while also planning a myriad of activities throughout the year, including games, spirit weeks, dress-up days, and athletic event themes. Additionally, Student Council supports other school/community organizations in their activities, while performing philanthropic work at various points throughout the school year.
- How to Join - Student Council members are elected class officers and representatives. Elections for incoming freshmen take place in the fall of their freshman year; all other elections take place in the spring for the coming year.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
- Sponsors - Tara Welch and Lisa Stith
- Requirements - All grades are welcome to join. In order to become an officer: an application must be filled out; along with a possible interview.
- Description - Students Against Destructive Decisions is a club that encourages all of our students to be positive leaders in our school. It focuses on making good choices and realizing the impacts of our choices. SADD has monthly meetings and performs a variety of activities throughout the year.
- How to Join - It is best to join our club early in the year. Every August, we have a Coaler Club Day in which students can sign up at that time or a prospective member can see a sponsor at a later date to become part of our organization.
Students Standing Strong [S3Club]
- Sponsor - Michael Kostbade
- Requirements - All students and staff are welcome to attend any our out morning meetings which are typically held every Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in the LRC
- Description - S3 is a Christian students club. Meetings include Bible lessons, games, food, fellowship and prayer [all student led].

Trap Shooting

Visual Art / Art Club
- Sponsor - Mark Fiske
- Requirements - Open to all high school students who are interested in helping out with a variety of art related projects. To be an active member and to be eligible to attend the Spring field trip, students must acquire at least five service hours.
- Description - Art Club exists to give students the opportunity to find a creative outlet while serving the student body and surrounding community. The Art Club is active in helping provide school spirit though face painting through the year, helping at Haunted Hallways, preparing artworks for display at the Coal City Fine Arts Festival, along with a variety of other creative projects during the school year.
- How to Join - Students can join the Art Club throughout the year, but the best time to join is in the fall. Art Club meets regularly and students are welcome to attend and join at any time.
Winterguard
- Sponsors - Savannah Jacobs and Madeline Enervold
Yearbook
- Sponsor - Amanda Malsky
- Requirements - Students must have a sophomore to senior status in order to complete an application to become a member of the yearbook staff. Applications are available in approximately December to January.
- Description - This activity will involve the complete production of a high school yearbook. Students will design and edit pages for submission to the publisher. They will also be responsible for writing copy, interviewing, budgeting, selling advertisements, taking photos, and marketing the yearbook.
- How to Join - Complete an application and return to Ms. Malsky via a Google Form. Consideration will take place and students will be selected and notified before choosing class schedules.
