Mark Larmon Music Booster - Senior Involved in Band or Chorus
The Mark Larmon Scholarship Fund was started by the Coal City Music Boosters in September, 2007, in honor of the many dedicated years Mark Larmon spent as a music educator in the Coal City schools. He graduated from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago and attended graduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston. Mark was the Band Director for the Coal City School District from 1979-2008.
Marks shares these thoughts for prospective music educators:
"I appreciated Vandercook's undergraduate curricular requirement that everyone actually learn to play
most of the band/orchestra instruments (and vocal), up to at least an intermediate level in order
to graduate.
I wish I had been more proficient on piano/keyboards. Quickly found out that it really helps to
start at a younger age. Glad that guitar can be a suitable substitute at times.
The musical instrument repair classes that I took really came in handy, especially just prior to
performances.
Personally, I’ve found that participation in non-school related music groups (e.g. community
bands, church worship teams etc.) in your free time can be good for the soul.
Find ways, in your own teaching style, to make learning music fun. Bad jokes are essential!
Having the support of music booster’s; helpful parents, school faculty/staff/administration, and
the public; are ‘key’ (pun intended) to a successful school music program."
