Band Program Faculty/Staff

Hope Connelly is Director of Bands at Coal City High School. Hope Connelly is a 2015 graduate of Coal City High School. She graduated with a Bachelors in Music Education from McKendree University. At McKendree, Ms. Connelly participated in the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Bearcat Band, Pep Band, Show Choir Vocal Jazz, Concert Choir, Flute Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Jazz Ensemble, musical theatre and the university’s chapter of NAfME (National Association for Music Education). Prior to Coal City, Hope taught 5th grade flute and oboe at Amelia Carriel Junior High School during the 2017-2018 school year. From 2017-2019 Hope was also the flute instructor for the Central Cougars Marching band and the Mater Dei Marching Knights in Breese Illinois. She welcomes all students at Coal City High School to join one of the many music ensembles and become part of our music family.

Lynnae Bontrager is in her second year as the director for the Coal City Intermediate School and Middle School bands.  She teaches 5th grade Beginning Band, 6th Grade Cadet Band, 7th/8th Grade Concert Band, and the CCMS Jazz Band.  She graduated with a Bachelors in Music Education from Olivet Nazarene University.  While at Olivet, she was active in the ONU Tiger Marching Band, Pep Band, ONU Wind Ensemble, Orpheus Choir, Flute Choir, and the ONU chapter of NAfME (National Association For Music Education).  Prior to coming to Coal City, she taught in the Kankakee District 111 Band program and student-taught middle school band in Bourbonnais Elementary School District 53.

Locally, she teaches private flute lessons and has assisted various high school marching band programs during their summer band camps.  She also actively performs in the River Valley Wind Ensemble, Kankakee Municipal Band, and Acting Out Theatre Co. pit orchestra.  She is looking forward to working with the Coaler Marching Band this fall!  

Madeline Sandgren is in her first year as the Colorguard and Varsity Winterguard coach for Coal City High School.  Madeline is a 2014 graduate of Morris Community High School, where she began her guard journey. There, she performed for her last two years of high school, and went on to become an assistant coach for Morris for two more years.  Madeline graduated with her Masters in Social Work from Aurora University in 2020 and works as a mental health therapist during the day. Madeline loves teaching her students and hopes they feel the same joy while performing as she did many years ago!
